Acupuncture has been used to treat animals for thousands of years in China. It involves the insertion of dry needles at certain points on the body, typically along meridian lines. These meridian lines, or channels, transport Qi or chi, around the body. Traditional Chinese Medicine works on the concept of keeping these channels open and flowing so that Qi flows smoothly throughout the body. If there is a blockage in one of these channels, then disease or pain may eventuate. The insertion of dry needles at these acupuncture points helps balance the Qi along the meridian.

While western medicine deals well with acute and surgical conditions, acupuncture can be particularly beneficial for chronic conditions. In China, acupuncture is also frequently used to prevent conditions arising.

Acupuncture can help with the following conditions:

     * Muscularskeletal problems - including arthritis, intervertebral disc problems,

inflammation, hip dysplasia, muscle and tendon pain

     * Respiratory problems - including asthma, heaves, 'bleeders'

     * Neurological problems - including facial paralysis

     * Gastrointestinal problems - including diarrhoea, nonsurgical colic (with vet

        supervision)

     * Skin problems - including dermatitis

     * Overall performance - regular acupuncture can help keep horses at top physical               condition when used on a regular basis
